Twitter Weekly Updates for 2009-10-11

  • You can't transfer ownership of a google doc if you're in a different domain from your students. #
  • Our students and staff use google docs – the students are set up on a separate domain with "student" in the domain name #
  • Teacher are using Google docs on a separate domain – students need to type the email address carefully to share docs with the teachers. #
  • Installing phpBB to create a literature circle online is ridiculously easy with BlueHost. One click install using the SimpleScripts feature. #
  • Which is better for online literature circles: wordpress, phpBB, google docs, or wikispaces? #
  • Australia (NSW) gives each student a netbook for school until they graduate highschool: 240,000 computers. http://bit.ly/4XOk5 #
  • Student laptops embedded with tracking software at the BIOS level and can be remotely disabled if lost or stolen http://bit.ly/4XOk5. #
  • You can restrict student accounts to specific forums easier in phpBB than you could using WordPress. (You'd need a WordPress plugin.) #
  • Maintenance logs in phpBB are much more powerful than WordPress – you can track user changes / activities. You can't do that in WordPress. #
  • Google Docs is simply HTML. It's easier to format the tables in a web design program like DreamWeaver than to create the tables in Docs. #
  • When leaving teacher comments in Google Docs, it's easier to highlight in Word and then copy/paste the rubric into the Google Doc. #
  • Creating a Word macro to highlight items in the student rubric using different colours of highlighter and then copy into Google Docs. #
  • Sub highlight_yellow()
    Options.DefaultHighlightColorIndex = wdYellow
    Selection.Range.HighlightColorIndex = wdYellow
    End Sub #
  • You can assign keyboard shortcuts to macros to speed up the process. #
  • Can Markbook be edited by multiple teachers simultaneously? We need an online way for 7-10 teachers to enter marks to the same file. #
  • Google Spreadsheets allow you to validate data entry based on number, text, or date format… but not a list of student numbers or marks. #
  • Google Spreadsheet doesn't allow you to validate based on a range of cells. #
  • How do administrators create user accounts in phpBB? Is there a way to bulk create student accounts? #
  • Modification to phpBB to allow administrators to create user accounts from the Admin Control Panel. http://bit.ly/mrDPd #
  • How to Modify your phpBB installation http://bit.ly/s4nKJ #
  • Instructions to install AutoMOD on your phpBB account: http://bit.ly/28Kn0 AutoMOD can be downloaded here: http://www.phpbb.com/mods/automod #
  • Can you protect cells in Google Spreadsheet so they don't get modified by accident? #
  • Tool to setup student accounts (usernames, email, password) into a phpBB bulletin board by importing a CSV file. http://bit.ly/YJGGn #
